ILM construction update: New canopy, pedestrian tunnel and parking improvements underway

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Construction continues at Wilmington International Airport as several projects aimed at improving passenger access, traffic flow and parking begin to take shape.
ILM shared an update showing progress on a new overhead “wave” canopy being built above the terminal curb front.
The canopy will provide coverage for passengers using the airport’s pickup and drop-off areas while also increasing curb capacity.
The project includes an extended departures and arrivals curb, along with a dedicated commercial drop-off area for taxis and rideshare services.
New canopies will also connect the terminal to crosswalks leading toward the airport’s parking areas.
Pedestrian tunnel taking shape
Framework is also going up for a new pedestrian tunnel that will connect the airport’s parking area directly to the main terminal.
The tunnel is designed to make the trip between parking and the terminal more convenient for travelers while providing a covered connection.
ILM is also expanding its parking options as part of the ongoing improvements.
The airport says the project will add:
- Additional surface parking spaces
- New covered parking spaces inside the parking garage
- A covered area for rental car pickups and returns
The projects are part of a broader transformation underway at ILM as the airport works to improve the passenger experience and accommodate growing demand.
Airport officials said construction is continuing, with additional progress expected as the projects move forward.
