WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Wilmington Sharks head coach Russ Burroughs has been named the Coastal Plain League’s Coach of the Year after leading the team to its second championship in three seasons.

The Sharks defeated the Macon Bacon in a hard-fought three-game Pettit Cup Championship Series, capped by an 11-0 victory in Game 3 on Aug. 10.

Burroughs, who is in his sixth season as the Sharks’ manager, is the winningest coach in franchise history. He also serves as a baseball instructor with the Nashville Baseball Academy during the offseason.

Following the championship, Burroughs talked about his connection to Wilmington and the Sharks.

“It means everything. I bleed Wilmington blue. I do this 12 months out of the year. I love these fans, I love the city, I love everything about Wilmington. This will be my home forever.”

Known for his calm approach, Burroughs has helped establish the Sharks as one of the Coastal Plain League’s most consistent teams. Wilmington has reached the postseason in three consecutive seasons and won the 2024 and 2026 CPL championships.
