NCDEQ: Leland home demolished after diesel release, petroleum contamination found

LELAND, N.C. (WWAY) — State environmental officials are providing new details after a rental home in Leland’s Jackey’s Ridge community was demolished because of soil contamination.

Demolition crews tore down the home on Pine Notch Road on Monday after contamination was discovered beneath the property.

BH Management, the property owner, said testing conducted throughout the community indicated the contamination was isolated to the one home and was not a community-wide issue.

The North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality told WWAY the property is the site of a reported 30-gallon diesel release and identified petroleum-related contamination.

“It appears the home was constructed over an area of impacted soil. Based on information currently available to DEQ, there is no indication of a threat to drinking water beyond the affected property,” DEQ said in a statement. “DEQ will continue to evaluate conditions and will take appropriate action if new information identifies additional concerns.
