Team of the Week: Topsail gets long-awaited win over rival Dixon
Dixon jumped out to an 8-0 lead, but Topsail answered with 13 straight points before halftime. Kyle Albert scored three touchdowns in the win, while Roman Long came up big defensively with two interceptions. His second pick came late in the game in the end zone, helping the Pirates seal the victory.
The win was a long time coming for Topsail.
“It’s obviously huge,” Topsail head coach TJ Albert said. “It had been a year and a half or so since they had won a football game.”
Now, the Pirates are taking that momentum back to the practice field.
Albert said the team still has plenty to clean up, particularly when it comes to mental mistakes, but the confidence around the program has changed.
“We just gotta clean up a lot of the mental mistakes,” Albert said. “We’re gonna try to be ourselves, do what we do.”
After waiting 14 games for a win, Topsail is hoping the next one comes much sooner. The Pirates will look to make it two straight when they take on Croatan on Friday, weather permitting.
For ending a 14-game losing streak and delivering a statement win over a rival, Topsail is this week’s WWAY Sports Team of the Week.
