Dance and film event to kick off 32nd annual Cucalorus Film Festival

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The Wilson Center at Cape Fear Community College will host Dance-a-lorus on Nov. 19, kicking off the 32nd annual Cucalorus Film Festival, organizers announced Monday.

The performance, set for 7 p.m. on the Wilson Center’s main stage, opens the four-day independent film festival, which has run in Wilmington since 1994.

Dance-a-lorus pairs filmmakers with choreographers for a live show that blends dance and cinema. Organizers describe the event as a showcase for regional artists, featuring work that ranges from abstract pieces to documentary-style film.

This year’s performance is produced by Sue Meier of the Dance Cooperative, Alex Toribio of Cucalorus, and Tammy Daniels, the Wilson Center’s senior managing director, who also performs in the show.

“We’re very excited to deepen our partnership with Cucalorus by bringing this cultural mainstay to our main stage,” Wilson Center Executive Director Zach Pluer said in a statement. He said the venue aims to support regional film through programming that pairs cinema with live performance.

Cucalorus draws filmmakers, performers and community organizers to Wilmington each year, presenting a slate of international and independent films over the course of the festival.

Tickets for Dance-a-lorus are on sale through the Wilson Center website or by phone through the Wilson Center Box Office. Cucalorus passholders can also gain entry by presenting their pass at the door. Festival passes, called Pegasorus passes, are available separately online and grant access to screenings, performances and parties throughout the event.
