Wilmington launches new online public records request system
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The City of Wilmington has launched a new online system designed to make it easier for residents, members of the media and others to request and access public records.
Powered by NextRequest, the new portal gives users one central location to submit public records requests, track their status and receive records electronically when they are available.
Previously, public records requests were submitted through an online form to the City Clerk’s Office. While the form allowed requests to be submitted electronically, users could not track the status of their requests or see where they were in the process.
With the new portal, users can create an account to follow a request from submission through completion, receive updates and communicate with city staff about active requests.
The system also allows users to search records that have already been released. The city says this could allow people to find information they are looking for without having to submit a new request.
Behind the scenes, the city says improved workflows will help departments coordinate requests involving multiple offices or large amounts of information.
The new system also replaces the city’s former public and media email mailbox, which provided on-site access to search city employee emails by appointment.
According to the city, that mailbox was deactivated following a security review to reduce cybersecurity risks and prevent the accidental release of personally identifiable information.

The city’s new public records portal is available online, with a link also available through the City Clerk’s webpage on the City of Wilmington website.
