CAM to host illustrated lecture with artist Mel Chin Thursday

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Acclaimed conceptual artist Mel Chin will discuss his career and work during an illustrated lecture Thursday at the Cameron Art Museum.

The event, titled “CAM After Dark: Illustrated Lecture with Mel Chin,” is scheduled for 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Sept. 10 in the museum’s Reception Hall.

Chin’s work has included sculpture, installation, technology, environmental projects and collaborative public art. During the lecture, he will use images and conversation to discuss projects from throughout his career and the ideas behind his work.

Chin is a recipient of a MacArthur Fellowship and a member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters. His work has explored social, political and environmental issues.

Among his projects is “Revival Field,” an environmental artwork that examined the use of plants to remove toxic metals from contaminated soil. Another project, “Unmoored,” was a large-scale public installation in New York City’s Times Square that explored the effects of climate change and rising sea levels.

The event is being presented in partnership with the University of North Carolina Wilmington’s Department of Art & Art History and Office of High Impact Practices.
