North Carolina Aquariums celebrate 50 years of conservation and education
NORTH CAROLINA (WWAY) — The North Carolina Aquariums are marking their 50th anniversary Wednesday, celebrating five decades of education, conservation and public engagement with the state’s aquatic environments.
The North Carolina Aquariums, a division of the North Carolina Department of Natural and Cultural Resources, were established on Sept. 9, 1976, as three Marine Resources Centers at Fort Fisher, Pine Knoll Shores and Roanoke Island.
The system now welcomes more than one million visitors each year. Jennette’s Pier became part of the NC Aquariums system in 2011.
Over the past 50 years, the aquariums have expanded their work to include aquatic animal care, wildlife rescue and rehabilitation, conservation research, science education and partnerships focused on protecting aquatic species and habitats.
“For 50 years, the North Carolina Aquariums have been part of growing up, learning, and exploring this state,” said Hap Fatzinger, director of the North Carolina Aquariums. “For some people, it was a first school field trip or a family vacation. For others, an experience here sparked a lifelong interest in aquatic life or conservation.”
Gov. Josh Stein recognized the anniversary with a proclamation honoring the aquariums’ contributions to education, conservation, research, tourism and communities across North Carolina.
The proclamation also recognizes the staff, volunteers, scientists, educators, donors and visitors who have contributed to the aquariums’ history.
The aquariums are also preparing for future investments. The North Carolina Aquarium at Fort Fisher is undergoing a major renovation and expansion that is expected to nearly double the size of the facility.
The project will include a new shark habitat, expanded education spaces and additional opportunities for hands-on learning and animal encounters.
Anniversary events and programs will continue through the end of the year at the NC Aquariums and Jennette’s Pier.
