Wilmington Parks & Recreation introduces Stanley as official mascot

Wilmington, NC (WWAY) — Wilmington Parks & Recreation has introduced Stanley, a Venus flytrap character selected by residents as the department’s official mascot.

The mascot draws inspiration from the Venus flytrap and its connection to the Wilmington area, as well as Stanley Rehder, a longtime advocate for the carnivorous plant. The Stanley Rehder Carnivorous Plant Garden in Wilmington is named in Rehder’s honor.

According to the city, Stanley is intended to serve as a community ambassador for Wilmington Parks & Recreation, highlighting local parks, recreation opportunities, conservation and community events.

The city developed a backstory for the mascot that depicts Stanley as growing up among the pine forests, wetlands and other natural areas of the Cape Fear region. The character is described as curious and eager to explore the community.

Stanley’s role will include helping residents learn about recreational opportunities and community activities while promoting conservation and appreciation for the area’s natural environment.
