Laney football falls to Northside Jacksonville in Tuesday makeup game

WILMINGTON, N.C. (WWAY) — Laney jumped out to an early lead Tuesday night, but Northside Jacksonville rallied in the second half to hand the Buccaneers a 28-7 loss in a makeup game. The rare Tuesday night matchup began a quick turnaround for Laney, which entered the game just days after picking up its first win of the season.

The Buccaneers struck first in the opening quarter. Sophomore running back Jackson Cosimo powered his way into the end zone to give Laney a 7-0 lead. Laney’s defense helped preserve that advantage. Defensive tackle Nizier Hines recorded a sack before defensive end Jayden DeLoatch recovered a Northside fumble in the second quarter, stopping a Monarchs scoring opportunity.

The Buccaneers carried their 7-0 advantage into halftime, but Northside’s offense took control after the break.

Quarterback Reginald Gray broke free for a rushing touchdown to cut Laney’s lead to 7-6 after a failed two-point conversion.

Gray later connected with Gavyn Davis on a deep pass to put Northside in scoring position. Running back Rahlai Anderson finished the drive with a touchdown, and Gray found Davis for the two-point conversion to give the Monarchs a 14-7 lead.

Northside continued to pull away when Gray connected with Jahian Johnson for another touchdown, extending the lead to 21-7. The Monarchs added one more score to secure the 28-7 win. The Buccaneers fall to 1-3 on the season

Laney now faces a short turnaround before returning to the field Friday night. The Buccaneers will open conference play at home against West Brunswick. WWAY will have highlights from Friday night’s action on the 5th Quarter at 11 p.m.
