State trooper shoots, kills driver after pursuit in Duplin County

DUPLIN COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation is investigating after a State Highway Patrol trooper shot and killed a driver following a pursuit and roadside struggle in Duplin County late Tuesday night.

According to a preliminary investigation released by the State Highway Patrol, a trooper attempted to stop a driver for speeding around 11:36 p.m. in the area of N.C. 41 near Durwood Evans Road.

Highway Patrol said the driver did not stop for the trooper’s emergency equipment, leading to a short pursuit.

At the end of the pursuit, the driver got out of the vehicle and ran, according to Highway Patrol. The trooper followed on foot and eventually caught up with the driver.

Highway Patrol said a “violent roadside struggle” followed and the trooper was assaulted before firing his service weapon, striking the driver.

The agency said the trooper immediately began life-saving measures until emergency medical personnel arrived. The driver was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver’s identity has not been released as authorities work to notify next of kin. Highway Patrol said no other suspects are being sought.

The trooper was identified as Master Trooper Connor Davis, a seven-year veteran of the State Highway Patrol assigned to Duplin County.

Davis was taken to a local hospital for treatment. Highway Patrol did not provide additional information about his injuries or condition.

In accordance with agency protocol following a trooper-involved shooting, Davis has been placed on administrative duty.

The SBI is conducting an independent investigation into the shooting.
