Cape Fear Community College brings craft brewing classes inside local brewery

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Cape Fear Community College students studying commercial craft brewing will soon get hands-on experience inside a working Wilmington brewery.

CFCC is partnering with Flying Machine Brewing Company to hold its Commercial Craft Brewing classes inside the brewery’s production facility and laboratory on Randall Parkway.

The 10-week program combines classroom instruction with 10 hours of hands-on fieldwork. Students will get experience brewing, kegging and canning beer using commercial equipment.

The curriculum covers the brewing process from “grain to glass,” including brewing science, beer styles, flavor profiles, equipment operation, quality control and industry service standards.

“We are always looking for innovative ways to connect our workforce training directly to local industry,” CFCC President Jim Morton said. “Partnering with Flying Machine Brewing Company provides our students with an exceptional, hands-on learning environment.”

Flying Machine Brewing Company owner Grant Steadman said the partnership will provide instruction directly related to the craft brewing industry.

“The community college system is so important in enhancing the skilled trades in the state, and Cape Fear’s program will provide valuable instruction directly related to our industry,” Steadman said.

The program is designed for people interested in entering the industry, current industry workers looking to expand their skills and hobbyists interested in learning more about commercial brewing.
