Dogs, bikes and ‘Ghostbusters’: October events coming to Wrightsville Beach
WRIGHTSVILLE BEACH, NC (WWAY) — From dogs catching flying discs to a bicycle safety course and a movie under the stars, Wrightsville Beach Park will host several community events throughout October.
The month begins with the 31st annual Bark in the Park on Saturday, Oct. 3, at 11 a.m.
The free event features a canine disc competition, with dogs earning points for distance and accuracy and additional points for catches made in the air. No previous competition experience is required.
Dogs and their owners can also compete for Best Dressed Dog, Best Dressed Team and Dog Displaying the Most Personality. Spectators will vote for the winners of those contests, and dogs do not have to participate in the disc competition to enter.
For safety, costumes cannot be worn by dogs during the disc competition rounds. Register online here.
Later in the month, the Wrightsville Beach Bike Rodeo will take over the park Sunday, Oct. 18, from 2 to 5 p.m.
Children can participate in a bicycle safety obstacle course to practice balancing, stopping, turning and following traffic rules. The course will be led by Tammy Swanson, a safety instructor with Cape Fear Cyclists and the Terry Benjey Foundation.
Participants are encouraged to bring a bicycle and helmet. Organizers will offer bike tuneups and check helmets for proper fit. Bicycles and helmets will also be available for children who do not have their own.
The event will also feature a “touch-a-truck” experience with vehicles and equipment used by law enforcement, public safety and public works departments from Wrightsville Beach and New Hanover County.
Complimentary hot dogs, hamburgers and drinks will be provided by Jimmy’s Bike Drive. Preregistration is required for everyone attending the Bike Rodeo.
October’s events conclude with a Movies in the Park showing of “Ghostbusters: Afterlife” on Friday, Oct. 30, at 6:45 p.m.
Families are encouraged to bring picnic baskets, blankets and lawn chairs for the outdoor showing at Wrightsville Beach Park.
