Día de los Muertos performance coming to UNCW’s Kenan Auditorium

Wilmington, NC (WWAY) — A performance celebrating Mexican music, dance and Día de los Muertos traditions is coming to the University of North Carolina Wilmington next month.

“Eternamente: A Día de los Muertos Spectacular” is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Oct. 23 at UNCW’s Kenan Auditorium.

The production features Mariachi Garibaldi de Jaime Cuéllar and Ballet Folklórico del Río Grande. The performance combines live mariachi music, traditional folklórico dance and a virtual altar honoring Día de los Muertos traditions.

The show will also feature songs paying tribute to Mexican artists.

Mariachi Garibaldi de Jaime Cuéllar was founded in 1994 by Jaime Cuéllar and is now directed by his son, Jimmy “El Pollo” Cuéllar. The group has performed with artists including Juan Gabriel, Alejandro Fernández, Aida Cuevas, Pepe Aguilar and Ángela Aguilar.

Ballet Folklórico del Río Grande is a 30-member organization directed by Miguel Peña and composed of alumni of the folklórico program at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley. The group has performed in the United States and internationally, including appearances in Canada, France, Italy, Argentina and Mexico.

The two groups have partnered on productions celebrating Mexican traditions, including Día de los Muertos.
