YMCA Wrightsville Beach Sprint Triathlon set for Saturday

Wrightsville Beach, NC (WWAY) — More than 1,400 athletes are expected to compete in the YMCA Wrightsville Beach Sprint Triathlon on Saturday, with organizers warning drivers to prepare for traffic delays during the sold-out event.
The YMCA of Southeastern North Carolina announced the 46th annual event has reached capacity. Thousands of spectators and volunteers are also expected in the Wrightsville Beach area.
The sprint triathlon includes a 1,200-meter swim through Banks Channel, followed by an 11-mile bike ride across the drawbridge and a 5K run around the Loop at Wrightsville Beach.
The event also includes a youth triathlon.
Organizers say the turnout is expected to affect traffic and parking in Wrightsville Beach and along Oleander and Airlie roads between 6:30 and 10:30 a.m. Saturday.
Residents living between Greenfield Loop Road and Oleander Drive should also expect delays. Law enforcement will direct traffic, and motorists are being advised to consider alternate routes or adjust their travel times.
The YMCA is also seeking additional volunteers to help with race-day operations, including water stations, the transition area, course directions and setup and cleanup.
Proceeds from the race support the YMCA of Southeastern North Carolina’s Annual Campaign, which provides financial assistance for programs including child care, youth sports, swim lessons and memberships. Funds also support community programs involving water safety, health and wellness.
The Wrightsville Beach Sprint Triathlon was first held in 1979 and is described by organizers as the oldest active sprint triathlon on the East Coast.
