REMINDER: Hoggard High School shifts to remote learning Monday as cleaning, remediation continue
New Hanover County, NC (WWAY) — Hoggard High School students will learn remotely Monday as New Hanover County Schools continues cleaning, remediation and environmental testing across the campus.
Superintendent Christopher Barnes notified families that the remote learning day will allow crews to continue additional cleaning, remediation, post-remediation testing and assessment work.
Students are expected to receive assignments and instructions from their teachers.
Hoggard’s campus consists of five buildings. The district said the main building and back building are being scheduled for industrial cleaning while assessments, testing and remediation continue in other areas.
The work includes deep cleaning, HEPA-filtered vacuuming, HVAC filter replacement and inspection, dehumidification and HEPA air filtration where appropriate. The district said ductwork will also be professionally assessed.
Areas requiring remediation will be sealed off and use negative air pressure during the work to help prevent contaminants from spreading, according to the district.
A professional industrial cleaning company with about 24 crew members began work Friday evening and was expected to continue through the weekend. Additional district custodial staff are scheduled to assist beginning Monday.
Two additional classrooms in the main building and library have been identified for remediation, according to the district.
Remediation is also underway in the science building, with post-remediation testing planned once that work is complete. The district estimates the remediation, testing, results and return of students to that building will take about two weeks.
Post-remediation testing was scheduled for Saturday in the cafeteria building. The district expects additional information early this week and currently anticipates reopening that building early this week.
No concerns have been reported in the back building, according to the district, and HVAC maintenance there was completed about two weeks ago. The gym has newer HVAC systems, which will continue to undergo inspections and assessments.
Environmental professionals will continue testing, sampling and assessments after remediation work. The district said those results and professional recommendations will be used to determine when affected spaces can return to normal use.
