Medical helicopter called to serious I-40 crash near Rocky Point

Rocky Point, NC (WWAY) — A medical helicopter landed on Interstate 40 near Rocky Point following a serious crash that left a driver trapped inside a vehicle on Friday, according to Pender County Emergency Services.

Emergency crews responded to the crash on westbound I-40 east of Rocky Point. Firefighters and paramedics determined the driver was trapped and would require a prolonged extrication.

Because of the severity of the crash and anticipated extrication time, ECU Health EastCare was requested to the scene. The helicopter landed directly on I-40 to transport the patient.

Both eastbound lanes were closed for an extended period while crews worked at the scene. One westbound lane was also closed.

Rocky Point Fire Department, Pender County Emergency Services Fire and EMS, Pender County Sheriff’s Office, North Carolina State Highway Patrol and ECU Health EastCare responded to the crash.

The State Highway Patrol is investigating the cause of the collision.
