FEMA announces $21 million for North Carolina disaster recovery
NORTH CAROLINA (WWAY) — FEMA is awarding more than $21 million to North Carolina for 29 projects aimed at supporting disaster recovery and reducing future damage.
The funding includes:
- $5.4 million to the North Carolina Department of Transportation for bridge, road, guardrail and riprap repairs related to Tropical Storm Helene.
- $2.4 million to North Carolina Emergency Management for culvert-related repairs, emergency protective measures and state management costs associated with Tropical Storm Helene, Tropical Depression Chantal and Hurricane Isaias.
- $1.7 million to the City of Asheville for permanent repairs to Hardesty Lane Bridge following Tropical Storm Helene.
- $1.1 million to the Town of Haw River to repair sewer systems damaged by Tropical Depression Chantal.
- $950,000 to Hendersonville Affordable Housing Corporation for management costs associated with Public Assistance grants related to Tropical Storm Helene.
FEMA is also awarding more than $4 million through its Hazard Mitigation Grant Program for projects designed to prevent, eliminate or reduce future disaster-related damage.
The funding includes more than $2 million to Yancey County to acquire and demolish seven flood-prone residential properties and cover associated management costs.
More than $2 million will go to Henderson County to acquire and demolish three properties.
Another $115,000 will go to a Catawba County acquisition project for property acquisitions, elevations, mitigation reconstruction and floodproofing.
The funding is part of more than $781 million FEMA announced for 493 projects nationwide as communities continue to recover from recent natural disasters.
