New Hanover County Democratic and Republican parties unitedly back school bond referendum

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The New Hanover County Democratic Party and New Hanover County Republican Party announced Wednesday that they jointly support a $320.5 million New Hanover County Schools bond referendum that will appear on the Nov. 3 ballot.
Democratic Party Chair Jill Hopman and Republican Party Chair John Hinnant said their support follows months of collaboration involving elected officials, school leaders, county staff and community stakeholders.
The proposed general obligation bond would fund several school construction and improvement projects, including the first phase of the New Hanover High School master plan, a new middle school to replace Trask Middle School, new elementary schools in Riverlights and at the Pine Valley Elementary campus, and an addition at Porters Neck Elementary. It also includes districtwide building, safety and technology improvements.
The New Hanover Community Endowment has committed up to $116 million over 10 years toward the county’s school capital projects if the referendum is approved. County officials estimate the bond would result in an additional property tax impact of about one-half cent per $100 of assessed value, or approximately $5 per year for a property valued at $100,000.
The two party chairs said the joint endorsement reflects their stated support for the planning process, financial oversight and proposed school investments.
Both parties are encouraging voters to review information about the referendum before Election Day.
