TABOR CITY, NC (WWAY) — Two people were arrested after deputies said they found suspected drugs and drug paraphernalia during a traffic checkpoint in Columbus County.

The Columbus County Sheriff’s Office said its H.E.A.T. Team was conducting a traffic checking station Tuesday, Sept. 29, on Cox Town Road near Wright Road in Tabor City.

According to the sheriff’s office, deputies stopped a Chevrolet Malibu driven by 48-year-old David Junior Jenkins of Knightdale.

Deputies said Jenkins provided an identification card instead of a driver’s license. While reviewing his identification, a deputy allegedly saw Jenkins attempting to conceal a glass pipe that was in plain view.

Jenkins was detained, and deputies then asked his passenger, identified as 37-year-old Christina Fulghum of Loris, South Carolina, to get out of the vehicle.

The sheriff’s office said Fulghum had a bag containing a powder-like substance. Deputies said a search of the vehicle also uncovered another glass pipe and additional powder-like substances.

Deputies also determined Fulghum had an outstanding order for arrest, according to the sheriff’s office.

Jenkins was arrested and charged with driving while license revoked and possession of drug paraphernalia. He was being held without bond.

Fulghum was charged with failure to appear on a misdemeanor, possession of a Schedule I controlled substance, felony possession of cocaine and possession of drug paraphernalia.

She received a $50,900 secured bond.

Both were taken to the Columbus County Law Enforcement Center.

Sheriff Bill Rogers said the H.E.A.T. Team focuses on traffic and drug-related activity in areas identified by the sheriff’s office as having higher crime rates.
