CFCC Learning Lab earns national certification

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Cape Fear Community College’s Learning Lab has earned a national certification for its academic support services.
The International College Learning Center Association awarded the CFCC Learning Lab its Learning Center Certification for 2026 through 2028.
According to CFCC, it is the only college in North Carolina to currently hold the certification.
The certification evaluates learning centers based on professional standards for academic support services, staffing, operations, program assessment and student success initiatives.
CFCC said evaluators highlighted the Learning Lab’s accessibility, student support services and learning environment. Reviewers also recognized the college’s use of data to make decisions about staffing, technology and funding.
The review also examined staff training, which CFCC said includes topics such as FERPA, Title VII, Title IX, bullying prevention and Mental Health First Aid in addition to tutoring techniques.
“Earning this national recognition validates the dedication of our team and the impact our Learning Lab has on student achievement,” said Kayla Page, CFCC’s director of Academic Support Services. “Our goal is to ensure every student has access to high-quality academic support, whether they are meeting with a tutor on campus or using our resources online in the middle of the night.”
The Learning Lab provides 24-hour online tutoring as well as in-person assistance in mathematics, science, writing and film and video production.
During the 2025-26 school year, more than 2,300 CFCC students used approximately 21,300 hours of tutoring, according to the college.
CFCC Learning Labs are located in the libraries at the Downtown and North campuses. Tutoring is free for current CFCC students.
