Shallotte Middle School to dismiss early due to smoke from nearby fire

SHALLOTTE, NC (WWAY) — Brunswick County Schools dismissed Shallotte Middle School students early on Friday due to the nearby fire and smoke in the surrounding area.
School officials have reported a noticeable smoke smell inside the building, prompting the district to take precautionary measures.
Car riders may be picked up beginning at 9:45 a.m., and buses are expected to arrive at 10 a.m.
Shallotte Middle School is the closest Brunswick County Schools campus to the fire area near Bricklanding Road and Old Georgetown Road.
Other nearby schools, including West Brunswick High School and Union Elementary School, are not experiencing similar indoor smoke conditions at this time and will continue operating on their regular schedules.
The district’s operations director has been in contact with the Brunswick County Emergency Operations Center, which confirmed there is currently no outdoor air quality alert for the public.
However, given the school’s proximity to the fire and the presence of smoke odor inside the building, district officials decided to dismiss students early out of an abundance of caution.
District officials will continue to monitor conditions and remain in communication with local emergency management personnel.
