South Columbus holds off Fairmont in conference play 16-14

TABOR CITY, NC (WWAY) — South Columbus held off a late push from Fairmont to earn a 16-14 Southeastern Conference victory on Senior Night.
Junior running back Gentry Thompson helped lead the Stallions offensively, scoring two touchdowns to give South Columbus an early advantage.
The Stallions also got a defensive contribution from junior defensive back Noah Bufkin, who intercepted Fairmont quarterback Jamarion Brown.
Fairmont responded behind Brown, who connected with junior receiver Khammari McNair on a pass down the middle of the field.
The Golden Tornados continued to build momentum as sophomore running back Jeremiah Morris scored on a touchdown run, bringing Fairmont closer.
South Columbus faced a late challenge in the fourth quarter after fumbling while attempting to run out the clock.
However, the Stallions’ defense came through when it mattered most. Preston Dager recorded a late interception to help secure the 16-14 victory.
South Columbus celebrated its seniors with the conference win.
