Wilmington City Council meetings, festivals among events planned this week

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Wilmington has a busy week ahead, with City Council meetings, National Night Out and two community festivals scheduled through Saturday.

The week begins Monday, Oct. 5, with a Wilmington City Council agenda briefing at 8:30 a.m. at City Hall in the Skyline Center, located at 929 N. Front St.

City Council meetings

City Council will hold a special meeting Tuesday, Oct. 6, at 5:30 p.m. in the Azalea and Magnolia rooms at the Skyline Center.

Council members are expected to review draft request for proposals language for the Community Investment Grant Program and discuss how the city should handle unsolicited funding requests.

The regular City Council meeting follows at 6:30 p.m.

Among the items on Tuesday’s agenda is the potential award of a $1.1 million construction contract for the Pirate Cove drainage project. The city says the project is intended to reduce flooding in the Pirate Cove neighborhood.

Council members will also consider a resolution adopting detailed city staff comments on the Cape Fear Memorial Bridge Environmental Assessment.

The meeting will include proclamations recognizing Oct. 5 through Oct. 10 as Minority Enterprise Development Week, October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month and Oct. 19 through Oct. 25 as Nuclear Science Week.

WPD National Night Out

The Wilmington Police Department will hold its annual National Night Out on Wednesday, Oct. 7, from 6 to 9 p.m. at Long Leaf Park, located at 314 Pine Grove Drive.

The event is intended to strengthen relationships between law enforcement and the community.

The public can meet WPD officers, explore community resources and take part in giveaways, music and games. Free food will also be available.

Fall Fest

Wilmington’s annual Fall Fest returns to Maides Park on Friday, Oct. 9, from 5 to 8 p.m.

This year’s event will be an hour longer and will feature fall treats, music, games, hayrides, bounce houses and more than 40 vendors.

There will also be a piñata every 30 minutes.

Maides Park is located at 1101 Manly Ave.

Fire in the Pines

The week wraps up with Fire in the Pines on Saturday, Oct. 10, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Halyburton Park.

The annual event teaches visitors about controlled burns, longleaf pine restoration, carnivorous plants and wildlife through activities, demonstrations and displays.

The event will also feature hayrides, music, food trucks and entertainment.

There will be no public parking at Halyburton Park during the event. Visitors should park at Lifepoint Church at the intersection of College Road and 17th Street and take a free trolley to the festival.
