CFCC Honors Program partners with local organization for adult readiness program

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The Honors Program at Cape Fear Community College has launched a partnership with the Transition Program for Young Adults, aimed at promoting self-advocacy, creative expression and inclusion.
The Transition Program for Young Adults, or TPYA, serves New Hanover County students ages 18 to 21 with disabilities. The program focuses on life, vocational and self-advocacy skills to help participants develop greater independence.
The partnership began with an interactive songwriting workshop led by Dr. John Hrebik, a CFCC English instructor and Honors Program coordinator.
During the workshop, TPYA students used a writing technique associated with musician David Bowie that involves cutting up and rearranging existing text to create new material. Students worked together to write an original song about overcoming obstacles.
The partnership will continue with an Open Mic Event organized by students in CFCC’s Honors American Literature course and TPYA participants.
The event is scheduled for Tuesday, Oct. 27, from noon to 3 p.m. at Union Station in Room U170 at CFCC.
The event is free and open to CFCC students, faculty, staff and the public.
Hrebik said the partnership is intended to highlight the talents and resilience of TPYA participants and encourage additional opportunities for collaboration and inclusion.
