New funding gives North Carolina film industry a boost as CFCC trains next generation

WILMINGTON, N.C. (WWAY-TV) — New funding for film projects in New Hanover County is giving local filmmakers and students renewed optimism as Cape Fear Community College works to train the next generation of industry professionals.

The college brought students, filmmakers and industry vendors together at Cinespace Studios for NC Film Vendor Day, an event featuring hands-on product demonstrations, studio tours and discussions about the future of North Carolina’s film economy.

The event came one day after Sen. Michael Lee announced legislative support for an additional $31 million in funding for film projects in New Hanover County.

Many students and educators say the funding is a promising step toward strengthening the local film industry, while industry professionals continue to push for a long-term solution to the state’s film incentives.

Bo Webb, who has worked in the film industry for 30 years and frequently works alongside CFCC film students, said the announcement has improved morale among those working in the industry.

“Getting some sort of stopgap measure, some sort of answer like we did yesterday is great,” Webb said. “I think it’s really boosted the mood for a lot of people, but it’s a tough business and it’s been really tough over the last few years.”

Kitt Johnson, a recent graduate of CFCC’s film program, said he hopes the industry continues to grow in New Hanover County and receives more support from the state.

“I want film to be big here more than anything because there is so much community here that thrives off of that fire and makes the most of it,” Johnson said. “They will carry that torch and they will champion it and trailblaze because I am testament to that, and I’m so glad I get to make the next proof of that.”

The $31 million in additional funding is expected to become available by the end of the year.

Legislators are also expecting a response from the North Carolina Department of Commerce within two weeks outlining which local film projects should be prioritized for the funding.
