Wilmington Police Department offers free women’s self-defense classes

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The Wilmington Police Department is offering women an opportunity to learn self-defense techniques through a free training program.
The department’s Women’s Self-Defense Training Course is taught by female police officers and focuses on helping participants develop practical skills to protect themselves.
The program consists of four classes held from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Haynes/Lacewell Police and Fire Training Facility, located at 3100 Hurst St. in Wilmington on October 21, 22, 28, and 29th.
The first session focuses on classroom instruction, while the remaining three sessions involve hands-on physical training. Participants are encouraged to wear comfortable clothing that allows them to move freely.
Women interested in participating must be at least 18 years old, be available to attend all four classes and undergo a criminal background check before being admitted.
The department says attendance at all four sessions is required because of a long waiting list.
Applicants must complete a criminal history release form and liability waiver before submitting their application.
