Wilmington man sentenced to prison for deadly e-bike crash on South Kerr Avenue

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — A Wilmington man has been sentenced to prison after pleading guilty to involuntary manslaughter in connection with a July crash that killed a man riding an electric bicycle.
According to the Sixth Prosecutorial District Attorney’s Office, 34-year-old Brian Keith Mcie pleaded guilty Wednesday, Oct. 14, in the death of 42-year-old Michael Leroy Daniels.
The crash happened July 6, 2026, on South Kerr Avenue near the intersection of Greenway Avenue in Wilmington.
Prosecutors say Mcie was driving at a high rate of speed and attempting to change lanes when he struck Daniels, who was riding an e-bike.
Daniels died at the scene.
According to the District Attorney’s Office, witness statements, video footage and physical evidence showed Mcie was traveling at speeds of up to 74 mph before the crash.
Investigators estimated he was traveling between 45 and 50 mph at the time of impact.
The posted speed limit along that stretch of South Kerr Avenue is 35 mph.
Prosecutors also cited Mcie’s history of speeding violations and vehicle collisions across multiple North Carolina counties.
According to the District Attorney’s Office, the fatal crash was Mcie’s seventh vehicle collision in four years.
Chief Superior Court Judge Kent Harrell sentenced Mcie to 20 to 33 months in prison, citing his prior record and the aggravating circumstances of the crash.
The sentence was handed down Wednesday following Mcie’s guilty plea.
