WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The Grammy-winning Count Basie Orchestra is bringing its signature big band jazz sound to Wilmington next month.

UNCW Kenan Auditorium will host the orchestra Friday, Nov. 13, at 7:30 p.m., featuring an evening of swing, blues and jazz improvisation.

Founded by legendary pianist and bandleader William James “Count” Basie, the orchestra has remained a prominent name in jazz for decades, preserving the musical traditions that helped define the big band era.

From its beginnings in Kansas City to performances on stages around the world, the ensemble continues to introduce Basie’s music to new generations.

The orchestra is currently led by Scotty Barnhart, an internationally recognized jazz trumpeter, composer, arranger and educator.

Barnhart became the orchestra’s director in 2013 after spending 20 years as its featured trumpet soloist.

A three-time Grammy Award winner, Barnhart has helped guide the orchestra to continued recognition, including a 2024 Grammy Award for Best Large Jazz Ensemble for its album Basie Swings the Blues.

The album features collaborations with blues musicians Buddy Guy, Bobby Rush, Keb’ Mo’ and George Benson.

According to UNCW, the upcoming performance will showcase the orchestra’s distinctive sound, powerful arrangements and improvisational style.

The concert is scheduled for Friday, Nov. 13, at 7:30 p.m. at UNCW’s Kenan Auditorium.

Tickets and additional information are available online.
