Hoggard shuts out Laney 36-0, spoils 50th-year homecoming celebration
WILMINGTON, N.C. (WWAY) — Laney High School celebrated 50 years of Buccaneer tradition during its homecoming game Friday night, but the Hoggard Vikings had other plans, cruising to a 36-0 victory to remain undefeated in conference play.
Hoggard wasted little time getting on the scoreboard. Quarterback Matthew Boring handed the ball off to Judah Gillespie, who powered his way into the end zone for a 3-yard touchdown run, giving the Vikings an early 7-0 lead.
Boring then turned to the passing game, connecting with Nakula O’Connor for a 53-yard touchdown to help extend Hoggard’s lead to 17-0.
The Vikings continued to build momentum as Boring found Micah Hunter downfield. Hunter made a defender miss before taking it into the end zone for another touchdown, pushing the score to 23-0.
Before halftime, Boring showed off his speed, faking a handoff before breaking free for a 42-yard touchdown run. That allowed Hoggard to take a commanding 30-0 lead into the break.
Hoggard went on to secure the hutout, spoiling Laney’s 50th-year homecoming celebration while keeping its undefeated conference record intact.
