LUMBERTON, NC (WWAY) — Robeson Community College has broken ground on a new Career Technical Education Building designed to expand hands-on training opportunities and prepare students for in-demand careers.

College leaders, elected officials, trustees, faculty, staff and community partners gathered Friday to mark the start of the project.

The 27,450-square-foot facility will house the college’s welding, heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC), and mechatronics programs.

The building will include a 3,257-square-foot flexible indoor laboratory and a 2,380-square-foot covered outdoor training area. The spaces will support hands-on instruction, collaboration between programs and customized workforce training for local businesses and industries.

College officials said the facility will help RCC expand training opportunities, prepare new employees and help existing workers develop skills to meet changing industry demands.

“This facility will impact generations, change lives, and create opportunities for students and families for years to come,” state Sen. Danny Britt said.

State Rep. John Lowery also highlighted the need for skilled workers in welding, HVAC and mechatronics as industries continue to seek qualified employees.

RCC President Melissa Singler said the project represents an investment in students and their future career opportunities.

The college said the new building is part of its ongoing efforts to support workforce development and economic growth in Robeson County and southeastern North Carolina.
