WHITEVILLE, NC (WWAY) — Two Tabor City men face charges following an investigation into break-ins at the Whiteville Public Works facility, according to the Whiteville Police Department.

Police said officers responded to the facility on Meares Street on Tuesday, Oct. 20, after a city employee arriving for work discovered a truck and trailer attempting to load tractor implements.

Officers stopped the vehicle and identified the occupants as Clayton Donald Soles and Michael Cartrette, both of Tabor City.

The department’s Criminal and Narcotics Investigation Division joined the investigation because detectives were already investigating a separate break-in at the same facility the previous night, according to police.

Investigators determined that Soles and Cartrette had also scrapped a water pump reported stolen during the earlier incident. Police said the stolen property was recovered and returned to the Whiteville Public Works Department.

Both men were charged with felony breaking and entering, larceny after breaking and entering, and two counts of attempted larceny.

Both men were given a $25,000 bond.
