Team of the Week: Hoggard Viking Football firing on all cylinders as playoffs approach

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The Hoggard Vikings are putting together an impressive football season, earning this week’s WWAY Team of the Week honors as they set their sights on an even bigger finish.

With quarterback Matthew Boring making history, playmakers stepping up on offense and a defense coming off back-to-back shutouts, the Vikings are proving they can get it done on both sides of the ball.

“We’ve just been clicking really well, getting everyone involved from our tight ends to our running backs to our receivers. Just been really good passing the ball recently, so we are looking to keep it going,” Boring said.

In their recent matchup against the Laney Buccaneers, Boring delivered four touchdowns, including a 42-yard run into the end zone.

Wide receiver Micah Hunter was another standout performer, recording eight catches for 118 yards and two touchdowns.

“We were getting the ball out good, Matt distributing it to everybody, just getting the ball out into space, just doing what he does,” Hunter said.

The connection between Boring and Hunter has become a major weapon for the Vikings’ offense, with Hunter continuing to deliver big plays.

“I seen the ball in the air and caught it. Perfect timing when he was coming and just planted. It gets me hype. I play better whenever we start getting up and getting going, just doing what we do,” Hunter said.

Boring is also making history at Hoggard. The Vikings quarterback has become the school’s all-time leading passer, surpassing 6,000 career passing yards.

“Couldn’t be possible without a great coach and a great team and everyone having my back and making plays for me, so just really, really happy about that,” Boring said.

While the offense continues to put up impressive numbers, Hoggard’s defense has been just as dominant, holding opponents scoreless in back-to-back games.

With the playoffs approaching, the Vikings are focused on carrying that momentum into the postseason.

“The goal is to get to the state championship, so that’s what we are working for,” Boring said.

Hoggard enters its next matchup with a 7-1 record and remains undefeated in Carolina Coast Conference play. The Vikings will travel to face North Brunswick as they look to continue their conference success and build toward a potential championship run.
