WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — With Halloween approaching, the Wilmington Fire Department is reminding families to celebrate safely while also inviting trick-or-treaters to stop by local fire stations for a sweet treat.

Firefighters will welcome families at all 10 Wilmington Fire Department stations on Saturday, October 31, from 5:30 to 8 p.m.

Visitors are asked to avoid parking in front of station bay doors, as fire trucks may need to respond to emergencies at any time.

The department also notes that crews may be away responding to calls when families arrive. If a station is temporarily unattended, visitors are encouraged to wait or return later.

Along with the Halloween festivities, the department is sharing several safety reminders for families heading out to trick-or-treat.

Halloween safety tips include:

  • Carry a flashlight or glowstick to improve visibility.
  • Wear reflective clothing when possible.
  • Stay on sidewalks and use crosswalks.
  • Stay together and watch for traffic.
  • Use extra caution around streets and driveways.
  • Drivers should slow down and remain alert for children in neighborhoods.

For those decorating their homes, firefighters recommend using battery-operated candles or lights instead of open flames and keeping decorations away from potential fire hazards.

The department says taking a few simple precautions can help ensure a safe and enjoyable Halloween for everyone.
