RALEIGH, NC (WTVD) — The Sigma Nu fraternity has been placed on interim suspension by North Carolina State University, while investigators look into allegations of hazing under the university’s internal student code of conduct.

NC State University Police are also conducting a separate criminal investigation.

Students involved in Greek life said the accusations have become a major topic of conversation across campus and could affect perceptions of fraternities and sororities.

“Our campus overall is against hazing,” said Levi Miller, a member of Alpha Gamma Rho.

But one of the university’s largest and oldest fraternities is now at the center of the investigation. Miller said the allegations are circulating among students and pointed to anti-hazing education required within Greek organizations.

In a statement, Sigma Nu’s national organization said the fraternity was founded in direct opposition to hazing. The organization also said both the fraternity and the university have suspended the activities of the Beta Tau chapter pending completion of the investigation.

Some students said the allegations reflect poorly on Greek life as a whole.

“This just makes all the frats look bad,” said Ben Nguyn.

“Many people that tell them the haze stuff they will never do themselves but they’re in that position where they can do it, and it just makes you look bad,” Nguyn said.

Concerns extend beyond a single fraternity.

According to the Hazing Prevention Network, national data found that 55% of college students involved in fraternities, sororities, teams, and other student organizations have experienced hazing. Among students who witnessed hazing, 71% said alcohol was involved in some way.

Nguyn said alcohol-related incidents remain a concern.

“With everything, there is good and bad. My best friend left the frat because someone in his frat got alcohol poisoning because they drunk too much because their frat bros told him to chug this crazy amount,” he said.

Students said they are closely watching how the university responds as questions about campus safety and accountability remain under investigation.
