WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — A Wilmington-area psychotherapist is hosting a workshop later this month exploring how breathing techniques may help people manage stress and support emotional well-being.

Liza M. Shaw, a licensed marriage and family therapist and certified breathwork facilitator, will lead a Transformational Breathwork workshop on Sunday, November 22, from 3 to 5:30 p.m. at Unity of Wilmington Spiritual Center.

The workshop will focus on Conscious Connected Breathing, a technique involving continuous, intentional breathing patterns.

According to Shaw, the practice is intended to help participants explore emotional awareness, relaxation and changes in consciousness without using medication or psychedelic substances.

Shaw said participants in previous sessions have reported experiencing feelings of calm, emotional clarity and connection.

“Many participants report, after engaging in conscious, connected breathing techniques, experiencing profound peace, greater emotional clarity, feelings of connection, and a deep sense of presence,” Shaw said.

Shaw has worked in the mental health field for more than 26 years and incorporates breathwork into her psychotherapy and clinical hypnosis practice.

The workshop is open to people with or without previous breathwork experience.

The cost of registration for the workshop is $40 through November 15 and $50 afterward.

Organizers say participants must arrive at 3 p.m. Doors will close at 3:30 p.m. once the breathing exercises begin.

Attendees are asked to bring a yoga or camping mat, blanket and water.

Additional information and registration details are available through Shaw’s website, Power to Thrive.

People interested in participating should consult a health care professional if they have medical or mental health conditions that could be affected by intensive breathing exercises.
