Whiteville honors North Carolinian Vietnam War veterans
WHITEVILLE, NC (WWAY) — Monday marks National Vietnam War Veterans’ Day.
In Columbus County, the traveling Vietnam NC wall made a stop at the Whiteville Vietnam Veterans Association building.
Members of the community could come and take in the rows of names honoring North Carolinians who fought and died in the war.
Mike Creen, a Vietnam veteran and President of the chapter said it’s important to honor the men and women who fought for their country, only to return home to a politically divisive climate.
“You have to look at that like,” Creen explained, “those of us who were in Vietnam, we were there. But we were there to take care of our brothers around us. To make sure that we all get home.”
The exhibit also included the names and pictures of Columbus County soldiers who gave their lives in the Vietnam War.
Locals could donate boxed or canned food items, which were donated to local food pantries.
