Leland VFW hosts National Vietnam War Veterans Day ceremony

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — The Leland VFW Post 12196 hosted a National Vietnam War Veterans Day ceremony at Belville Memorial Park Monday evening.

The commemoration recognized all who served on active duty in the U.S. Armed Forces at any time from November 1, 1955 to May 15, 1975.

“Tonight we just want to recognize their service and award them a pin, that was authorized by Congress to recognize veterans for their service,” Leland VFW Post 12196 Commander Gerald Decker said. “You know, we didn’t exactly get a ‘welcome home’ when we came back from that war, and so they’re making a conscience effort to make sure that veterans now realize how significant they are in their communities.”

“Along with that pin, they’re getting a certificate of appreciation from the state,” Leland VFW Post 12196 Chaplain Nathaniel Pringle said. “They’re also getting two proclamations from President Trump as well as Obama, and also we’re getting a proclamation from Governor Cooper.”

The Leland VFW said at least 50 veterans were honored.

This was an inaugural event for the group, and they hope it will continue in the future.
