Abuse of elderly, disabled rising in Buncombe Co.
ASHEVILLE, NC (AP) — Abuse of elderly and other vulnerable
adults has more than doubled in Buncombe County over the past six
The Asheville Citizen-Times reports protective services workers
responded to 797 adult abuse cases last year, compared with 318
cases in 2005. Nearly 700 cases have been filed this year.
Social workers cite better reporting of elder abuse,
insufficient services for mentally disabled individuals, a growing
aging population, and the economic downtown.
Buncombe County Adult Protective Services Supervisor Roxann
Sizemore says older and mentally disabled adults may be targeted by
family member or others who want to gain control of their assets.
Officials say more than 2 million older and mentally challenged
adults around the country are victimized annually. Sizemore said
for every reported case, five cases typically go unreported.
