Following Coast Guard rescue, they urge for safe Labor Day

WRIGHTSVILLE BEACH, NC (WWAY) — The Wrightsville Beach Coast Guard station rescued a group of five people on July 23 and they say it re-emphasizes the importance of boat safety.

According to the coast guard, they received a call in the middle of day saying “may-day”.

They headed out on the waters to the location of the distress signal and found five people trapped on their boat as water rose up.

The people were escorted to safety and the coast guard says they are always ready for something like this especially on holidays.

“During the holidays, there’s definitely a large influx of boaters out on the water. There’s just a lot more people out here that usually aren’t out here. People from out of state, out of there area come and they just want to go out and they don’t really know the area too well and things- you never know when things are going to go wrong.”

Dylan Hall also wants to remind everyone going out to wear their life jackets no matter what and if not they should be in an extremely accessible area.
