Airlink rescue at NC Ferry in Southport

SOUTHPORT, N.C. (WWAY) — The Southport Fire Department says that a “traumatic incident” occurred late this afternoon while construction work was being performed at the N.C. Ferry terminal.

Around 5:20 p.m., Southport Fire received a 911 call about a man injured by a piling that fell from a crane being operated from a barge.

In a Facebook post, the Southport Fire Department says that a man was “driving a piling from a barge and the piling broke” and “hit a subject in the head.”

A spokesperson for the department says that first responders worked for almost an hour performing a technical rescue using ladders and other equipment to get the man onto land, as the man was drifting in and out of consciousness.

Once on land, Airlink transported the man to the hospital.

There is no word on the man’s condition at this time.

Ferry traffic was delayed for about an hour as crews worked to rescue the man.

WWAY will bring you more information as it becomes available.
