WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Amazon says it plans to hire more than 1,500 people in the Wilmington area this holiday season as its new Cape Fear operations enter their first peak shopping period.

The Wilmington-area jobs are part of nearly 8,000 seasonal, part-time and full-time positions Amazon says it is adding across North Carolina. Nationwide, the company announced plans to hire more than 300,000 people.

The hiring push comes after Amazon opened a new robotics fulfillment center and nearby delivery station in Wilmington, marking the company’s first direct-to-consumer operations in the Cape Fear region.

Amazon says new positions will be posted weekly from October through December.

Seasonal workers earn an average of $20 an hour, according to the company. Full-time operations employees start at a minimum of $20 an hour, with average hourly pay across Amazon’s core operations workforce nearing $24.

Beginning Jan. 1, 2027, seasonal employees who work at least 30 hours per week will also become eligible for health care coverage. Amazon says employees hired before Jan. 1 will become eligible on that date, while qualifying workers hired afterward will have access beginning their first day.

The company says some seasonal employees may transition into permanent roles, though it did not specify how many of the Wilmington-area jobs could become long-term positions.

Amazon says it has invested more than $20 billion in North Carolina since 2010 and created more than 26,000 jobs statewide.
