App leads the way to Christmas lights around Wilmington neighborhoods

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Want to spread Christmas cheer? There’s an app for that. Wilmington has its very own Holiday Cheer Map which was created by residents to show their favorite places to celebrate the holidays like Christmas lights displays. This is the second year Nextdoor, a free and private social network for neighborhoods, has released the Holiday Cheer Map.

For some families it’s nice to have a little help finding the wonderful holiday combination of lights and music and that’s where apps or web pages like next door holiday cheer map come in. Sarah Thrailkill, her brother Eric Edwards and other family members were at a house on Buckhurst Court in Wilmington looking at lights and listening to the Christmas music.

“If you’re not familiar with the area, it makes it easier you know, instead of you just getting lost in neighborhoods,” said Thrailkill.

“I like Christmas music and the ones you can find on the map, you can find the ones with the animation and they synced up and it’s pretty cool,” said Edwards.

It’s homeowners like Kevin Smith who are bringing that to the people, his home can be found on the Nextdoor app on Savanna Run Loop.

“It hit that website, and hit Facebook and people coming started sharing it so i have more and more people, this year happens to be the heaviest year.”

Smith said he begins putting his display together November 1 and he even takes a week off work to get started but all that extra effort is worth it when people roll up to his house to sit, watch and listen.

“I think it’s exciting,” said Smith

The people we spoke with Monday night said they also like to use the Wilmington Christmas Lights Facebook page to find lights displays around town.
