Backyard BBQ Cookoff to bring more than 20 competitors to Fort Fisher Saturday

Kure Beach, NC (WWAY) — The Island Men will host their annual Backyard BBQ Cookoff this Saturday, Oct. 17, at the Fort Fisher Air Force Recreation Area, featuring a barbecue competition, live music, and local vendors.

During an interview with WWAY, Island Men representatives Lynn Halterman and Joe Tyron said 16 barbecue competitors have signed up for this year’s event.

The competition will focus on Eastern North Carolina-style pulled pork, with competitors preparing barbecue using different cooking methods and sauces.

Attendees will be able to sample barbecue from the competitors and vote for their favorite in the People’s Choice competition.

A panel of certified barbecue judges and a professional chef will select the other winners through blind tastings, evaluating entries based on taste, texture, and appearance.

Prizes will include cash awards and trophies for first, second, and third place, along with a People’s Choice award. The first-place winner will receive the Golden Pig trophy.

In addition to the barbecue competition, organizers said the event will feature approximately 30 vendors, two live bands, and a children’s entertainment area with bounce houses. Beer and wine will also be available for purchase.

Gates open at 10:30 a.m., with the event scheduled from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Admission is $15 per person, and children younger than 10 can attend for free. Tickets can be purchased at the entrance without advance reservations.

Free parking will be available in a field at Fort Fisher, with golf cart shuttle service transporting attendees between the parking area and the event.

Organizers encourage visitors to bring lawn chairs. Pets will not be allowed.

The Backyard BBQ Cookoff will take place at the Fort Fisher Air Force Recreation Area, located at 118 Riverfront Road in Kure Beach.
