Bald Head Island to host America’s 250th celebration Labor Day weekend
BALD HEAD ISLAND, NC (WWAY) — The Old Baldy Foundation and the North Carolina 4th of July Festival are teaming up to celebrate America’s 250th anniversary with a day of living history, family activities and entertainment on Bald Head Island over Labor Day weekend.
The celebration will take place Sunday, Sept. 6, and will commemorate the 250th anniversary of the Battle of Fort George, featuring historical reenactments, live music, food and interactive exhibits.
The event will run from noon to 6 p.m. on the grounds of Old Baldy, North Carolina’s oldest standing lighthouse.
A centerpiece of the celebration will be a living-history encampment featuring portrayals of North Carolina Continental Troops and the British Army, presented by North Carolina State Historic Sites. Battle reenactments are scheduled for noon and 3:30 p.m.
Organizers say the event is designed to give visitors an opportunity to experience history while celebrating the nation’s semiquincentennial.
“This is a true community collaboration between the Old Baldy Foundation and The NC 4th of July Festival,” organizers said in a news release. “We invite families and visitors from across North Carolina to experience history, honor our nation’s 250th year and make new memories on Bald Head Island.”
Guests traveling from the mainland can purchase tickets that include chartered ferry transportation from Deep Point Marina in Southport. Organizers noted the ferry route mirrors the crossing British troops would have made 250 years ago.
In addition to the historical programming, attendees can enjoy Southern Smoke BBQ, beverages from regional breweries and distilleries, a DJ playing music spanning 250 years of American history, dancing, raffles and other family-friendly activities.
Tickets are $80 for adults and $35 for youth with ferry transportation included. Those who do not need ferry transportation can purchase tickets for $70 for adults and $25 for youth. Parking at Deep Point Marina is not included with admission.
Organizers encourage attendees to purchase tickets early, as space is limited.
