Barfield keeps seat, two new comissioners voted in for New Hanover County

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — Three seats on the New Hanover County Commission were up for grabs.

100% of precincts have reported in the county and results are in.

According to the NC State Board of Elections, Bill Rivenbark (R), Deb Hayes (R), and Jonathan Barfield Jr. (D) are the top three candidates that received the most votes.

WWAY spoke with Hayes and Barfield after the results came in.

“First of all I want to thank all our hardworking volunteers, they have done such an incredible job and without them I wouldn’t be here,” Second of all, I want to say to all of the citizens, thank you for your vote, I represent everybody and I am ready to roll my sleeves up and get to work for you,” Hayes said.

“I served with Deb Hayes many years ago in 2006 when she was the president of the board of realtors, in 2007 I was the president of the board of realtors, so she and I were in leadership together,” Barfield said. “It’s going to be somewhat like dejavu so to speak having her on the board with us, and I’ve known Bill and his family for quite a while as well.”

WWAY reached out to Rivenbark for comment, but we have not yet received a response. Rivenbark currently serves on the New Hanover County Board of Education.

These are unofficial results until the votes as canvassed.
