Battleship North Carolina to illuminate for 9/11 remembrance

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The Battleship North Carolina will be illuminated in red, white and blue Friday evening in observance of Patriot Day and in remembrance of those who died in the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

Patriot Day is recognized as a National Day of Service and Remembrance. The day honors the nearly 3,000 people who were killed in the attacks, as well as the first responders who responded to the scenes and the families affected.

The illumination will begin at sunset and will be visible from Wilmington’s Riverwalk, nearby parks and locations across the Cape Fear River.

“The Battleship has long been a place where people come to remember service, sacrifice, and lives lost,” said Dr. Jay Martin, executive director of the Battleship North Carolina Memorial.

Martin said the lighting is intended to honor those who died, recognize the first responders who helped and reflect on the lasting impact of the attacks.

The Battleship North Carolina Memorial is open to the public year-round and serves as a memorial and educational resource focused on service and sacrifice.
