Battleship North Carolina to shine in patriotic colors for America’s 250th anniversary

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The Battleship North Carolina will light up the Cape Fear River this Independence Day, glowing in red, white, and blue as part of the nation’s celebration of the Fourth of July and America’s 250th anniversary.
Beginning at dusk on Saturday, July 4, the historic battleship’s iconic silhouette will be illuminated in patriotic colors, creating a striking display visible from downtown Wilmington and locations along the Cape Fear River.
As North Carolina’s official World War II Memorial, the Battleship North Carolina honors the more than 11,000 North Carolinians who lost their lives during World War II. This year’s special lighting also serves as part of the nationwide America 250 commemoration, marking 250 years since the signing of the Declaration of Independence.
“The Battleship represents more than a remarkable chapter in our nation’s military history—it represents the enduring ideals of freedom, service, and sacrifice that have defined America for nearly 250 years,” said Dr. Jay C. Martin, executive director of the Battleship North Carolina Memorial. “As we celebrate Independence Day and continue our America 250 observance, we invite our community to honor those who have defended those ideals across generations.”
The public is encouraged to view the illuminated battleship from downtown Wilmington, the Riverwalk, and other scenic locations along the Cape Fear River.
The patriotic display is part of the Battleship North Carolina Memorial’s ongoing participation in America 250, a nationwide initiative recognizing the people, events, and ideals that have shaped the United States over the past two and a half centuries.
Throughout the coming year, the memorial plans to host a variety of special programs and events highlighting American history through the stories of those who served aboard the USS North Carolina and honoring North Carolina’s “Immortal 11,000″—the state’s World War II service members who made the ultimate sacrifice.
Known as America’s most decorated World War II battleship, the USS North Carolina (BB-55) is permanently moored on the Cape Fear River in Wilmington, where it serves as both a memorial and educational attraction. Visitors can explore the ship, exhibits, and surrounding park while learning about the sacrifices of the Greatest Generation and the enduring legacy of military service.
