Battleship North Carolina’s popular ‘hidden battleship’ tours return in 2027
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — History buffs and adventure seekers will once again have the opportunity to explore rarely seen areas aboard the Battleship North Carolina when the popular Hidden Battleship experience returns in 2027.
The Battleship North Carolina Memorial announced Tuesday that tickets are now on sale for the behind-the-scenes tours, which offer visitors access to parts of the historic World War II battleship that are typically closed to the public.
Unlike the ship’s traditional self-guided tour, Hidden Battleship takes guests through unrestored spaces deep below deck, along the third deck, into the bow, and high into the ship’s superstructure, including a climb to the very top. Tours are led by experienced guides and are limited to small groups, giving participants an in-depth look at areas few visitors ever get to see.
The six-hour experience is scheduled for just four dates in 2027:
- Saturday, Feb. 27
- Saturday, March 20
- Saturday, April 24
- Saturday, Nov. 20
Each tour runs from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tickets cost $75 per person, plus tax.
According to the Battleship Memorial, the experience is designed for adventurous visitors and requires participants to climb ladders, navigate narrow passageways, cross high hatches and move through confined spaces. Because of the physical nature of the tour, participants must be at least 16 years old.
“Every compartment aboard the Battleship has a story,” said Dr. Jay Martin, executive director of the Battleship North Carolina Memorial. “Hidden Battleship opens doors that are normally closed, inviting visitors to step into the spaces where sailors lived, worked, and fought—and to experience the ship in a way very few people ever will.”
Due to the limited group sizes, the tours have become one of the Memorial’s most sought-after programs, frequently selling out well in advance. Organizers say the experience is especially popular with repeat visitors, military history enthusiasts, photographers and gamers looking for a unique perspective on the historic vessel.
Officials encourage those interested to reserve tickets early.
The Battleship North Carolina, permanently moored along the Cape Fear River in Wilmington, is recognized as America’s most decorated World War II battleship. Today, it serves as a memorial honoring the North Carolinians who served during World War II while offering educational programs, exhibits and community events focused on history, leadership and service.
