Beach town leaders talk shore safety after shark attacks

CASWELL BEACH, NC (WWAY) – Community leaders are taking extra precautions to make beach visitors feel safe after two shark attacks last Sunday.

According to Mayor Pro Tem Deborah Ahlers, officers are patrolling the shoreline on Caswell Beach to keep an eye on the water and swimmers and also to answer any questions people may have.

“It is nature and these things happen but we still have to be very cautious and we want to make sure all of our folks understand that there have been issues and that there are safety precautions that we need people to think about,” Ahlers said.

Signs have been put up warning people about the sharks in the area.

Other beach towns are also increasing beach patrols.

Currently, there are no plans at Sunset Beach or Ocean Isle Beach to employ lifeguards.
